The OOC RP Discussion Meme

[How To]

1. Discuss anything to do with RP-ing - Plots you want to try out, characters, characterization, head canon/fan theories, game ideas, meme ideas, fic and fanart ideas, AU and crossover ideas, Verse/PSL ideas, etc, etc. Game and comm promotions are fine, too.

2. Comments can be anon or non-anon, it's up to you.

3. Please do not bash, flame or name drop any mun or game in a negative fashion. No wanking, please!

4. Have fun!

can we finally all just agree that we don't need the hate meme? i think enough has happened to show that there's no 'public service' being done and we don't need 'a place to vent' like that. i have also yet to see what 'interesting conversations' happen there that can't be had in a place that isn't a pit of vitriol and drama that fosters creating problems rather than trying to solve them.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-17 09:47 am (UTC)(link)
we "need" it as much as we "need" rpanons, imo. I don't see problems being fixed on either. if you shut down wankgate, I'm pretty sure all the stuff there would make the natural move to rpanons, anyway.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-17 10:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'd rather not have rpanons turn into wankgate. I don't go to wankgate for a reason. If rpanons just turns into the same kind of shit stirring and insulting, I won't be going there either.

I like having a place to hang out away from negativity and vitriol, so I like having a place for negativity and vitriol to stay.

There's already enough shit-stirring and insults at rpanons as is, we don't need more of it moving in.

I'm not sure what the point of hate memes is. To "out" bad roleplayers, bad games and bad mods? Is that it? (Genuinely curious here, not being sarcastic.)

(Anonymous) 2013-03-17 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, it's a place to gather details (backed up with evidence, hopefully) of those oocly bad RPers, games and/or mods. Not just to complain, but to warn and be warned. The Ken debacle is perfect proof of this.

[personal profile] dr_house 2013-03-17 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
And what is the Ken debacle?

My problem is that sometimes things are harped on that were taken completely out of context. Judging someone on a couple of ooc comments without even trying to find out what they actually /meant/, is hardly fair.

As for the Ken thing, I'm not touching that with ...well anything.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-17 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
if it were just players like ken then there would be no problem. that would be an actual public service. but situations like that are incredibly rare. that isn't what we get there at all though. we get people bitching and moaning and encouraging harassment and mocking of anyone that they decide they don't like often 'backed up' with exaggerated or downright made up 'evidence'.

To bitch and complain about things or people you don't like, and feel vindicated because there will probably be at least one other person who doesn't like that same person or thing. Occasionally, it provides useful information on people who are inarguably horrible - the Ken thing is a good example of that - but anyone who claims that Wankgate is for the good of the community rather than just being a place for gossip and bitching about shit you don't like is either full of it or incredibly thick.

[personal profile] dr_house 2013-03-17 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
That's my take on it, too, after perusing the comm.

THIS.

Shut it down for good already.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-17 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that isn't going to happen, especially since the mods are a lot more active in keeping what very legitimately isn't supposed to be there.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-17 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
If that one gets shut down then another one will replace it. Does it have a purpose? Yes/No. Venting about shit that happens in a game/bakerstreet is healthy, and I actually would be okay with a monthly thing. No. I don't agree with what some of the people on there do. And, I'm not the only one that does that uses the hate meme for what it originally was intended to do. To call out OOC assholes.

keep shutting them down and eventually they'll die off and scatter to the winds.

You shouldn't of been an asshole then.

It's on the third hatecomm already and it's stronger than ever, even with the recent spamming over the mod banning hatespeech and slurs with an alternate comm made by people butthurt over the word bans. In any case, it keeps all the hate in one place and I rarely see people getting harassed for no reason. "Wank is nothing without deets" and usually if someone can't provide actual proof for what they're saying they're told to fuck off. The only reason the last one was shut down was because someone that was namedropped posted their own personal information and the mod wasn't able to get to it fast enough.

I know this isn't going to change any minds and I'm not going to pretend that the people there do some kind of great service by saying who to avoid or whatever because that's stupid and a lot of it is complaining over BS. But I don't think the hatecomm is as horrible and awful as everyone makes it out to be. People there don't decide to just arbitrarily pick on someone for no reason.

ya ok thar that'll happen.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-17 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Less frequent anon posts were more the thing a few years back and in retrospect I did prefer them. Sure, there was the impending sense of dread but the way things are working now means that there is a constant space for people to nitpick at stuff that really isn't a big deal in a bid to make it a big deal.

That said, people like to moan about shit though so whether there's a meme for it or not doesn't matter because people gossip. The thing people don't like about anon spaces is that it's out in the open to see as opposed to tucked away behind people's backs in IMs/private plurks. It's not that the acts don't happen, it's about the visibility, for my money.

personally i would like to return to the hate meme being a "once every two or three months" kind of deal, but i know that's never going to happen at this point.

Yes, we can. Hate memes have devolved from a place to "vent/warn about bad players/etc." into a place for cliques and those with too much time on their hands to just rant and wail on people and then condemn those who don't agree with everything they say. Entirely needless; if you want to be a douche, go do it in private with the rest of your cheerleader-squad friends and be publicly civil like the rest of us.

That isn't true of all the anons that go there. I have to wonder if you even go there, because it sounds like you're picking and choosing things just for the sake of strengthening your argument. Seriously...where are the cliques? We're all anon. It's kinda hard to form cliques under those circumstances.

Anyone who tries to condemn someone else for not agreeing with them will often find themselves shut down, argued with, or laughed at, or even none of the above depending on the circumstances. It might not even be any of the above--some people are actually very reasonable, and will freely admit that they might have been/were wrong after gaining some perspective on some matter. Of course, you're right in some respects, because that's the thing about anon communities--you're going to find all types--but trying to blanket an entire group with one narrow set of traits isn't particularly smart, nor accurate.

But, it's still Wankgate at the end of the day.

This comment perplexes me, honestly, if only because, uh, dozens of posts with thousands of comments on them would argue otherwise.

As for interesting conversations, I've learned quite a bit through a very civil discussion about different sorts of religion, actually. It started as a complaint about something, so.

And it's not true of everyone, but the first question from many, many anons is "Have you brought that up with them?" with regards to issues. Some people aren't interested in doing so, some people don't feel they can, and others eventually will; they just need to vent about it first to clear their heads before they hash shit out. Some people frequently are right dicks, it is a hatecomm after all, but there are people who, while perfectly aware of where they are and aren't out to change it, don't subscribe to the hating attitude and do offer advice where applicable.
