The OOC RP Discussion Meme

[How To]

1. Discuss anything to do with RP-ing - Plots you want to try out, characters, characterization, head canon/fan theories, game ideas, meme ideas, fic and fanart ideas, AU and crossover ideas, Verse/PSL ideas, etc, etc. Game and comm promotions are fine, too.

2. Comments can be anon or non-anon, it's up to you.

3. Please do not bash, flame or name drop any mun or game in a negative fashion. No wanking, please!

4. Have fun!

How would one set up a game without AC?

Make sure to allow duplicate characters.

AC is a relatively new thing in RP...back in the olden days, games either wouldn't have one or would have a surprise one every several months, and the only requirement would be "show that you've done something in the last couple weeks." It worked surprisingly well. There was no scramble at the end of each month, no influx of meaningless posts to collect comments, no one begging for threads to meet a post count requirement, and oddly, not many squatters.

If I remember right, the game I was in had a complaint system, where if a player's lack of activity was negatively impacting your character (say, a close canonmate that your character would normally look out for but who hadn't been around in months), you could tell the mods and they'd send an email asking if the person was still interested in playing the character, and if they were, to step up their activity and the mod would check on them again in a month or so. It was a large game, and though I know a few people filed complaints, I don't remember there being any drama related to squatting or people trying to get others booted for reasons unrelated to activity. Of course, this was before anoncomms and plurk, so RP was a somewhat less wanky place in general.

tl;dr, make people tag posts with their characters names and give people an avenue to alert you to squatters, and if the alert's accurate (which the tags will show), discuss the player's lack of activity with them privately. It's not a perfect system, but this way you don't have to allow duplicate characters and still have a way to fight character squatting.

This sounds interesting.

I personally would prefer something which allows multipile versions of the same character, though.

It depends on whether you want to make a DR with plot or a game without AC.
