I don't really have a reason why it shouldn't have been him, I'm just curious. It sort of came out of left field like Bulma and Vegeta, I guess..

I'm not sure I can explain it. He cared when he shouldn't have and made no demands after. And when I expected those demands later, he still didn't make them.
